Dowry is a social evil, which has affected our society very badly. It has caused too much destruction to the socio-economic structure in India. It is against the teachings of all religions. The constitution of India prohibits asking, taking or giving of dowry and it is a criminal offence.
In spite of all these objections, dowry system is widely practised in India especially in Kerala. Because of this system the social status of the women is deteriorated to a large extend. In Kerala these types of practices are too much among the Muslims comparing to other religions. The youngsters or their parents are demanding lakhs of rupees, land, gold, cars and many which an ordinary parent can’t afford and the condition will be worse if there are three or four daughters to be married.
Because of this reason the birth of a girl child is not welcome in an ordinary family. Tests for determining sex at a very early stage and killing of foetus, if it is proved a girl also become common in many communities. But this is against the teachings of all religions. It is a great sin and crime. The dowry persecution, killing and suicide are also become the common news. Hundreds and thousands of women are left unmarried because of this evil system. Empirical studies have proved that even the couple who got married with the strength of a big dowry fails to maintain a happy and peaceful married life.
AN APPEAL
It is an appeal to you young men and women to come forward and to participate in the crusade against this evil. We can do this by taking a strong and sincere pledge that I am ready to get married without paying or receiving dowry.
